Polytomies I is the first piece in a series inspired by biological forms. Constructed from cardboard using rationalized geometries, it is assembled entirely without glue through interlocking connections. Integrated lights respond to ambient sounds in various pre-programmed ways.
The overall shape was designed as a parametric three-dimensional model, then developed into flat geometries for mechanical-style assembly. The glueless construction allows for full disassembly, facilitating maintenance of the internal electrical components.
A dovetail joint system is used for the curved branch elements, relying on the elastic bending properties of the material to hold the structure under tension. As the dovetailed edges are joined, the flat-cut plates naturally form the intended three-dimensional shape.
